EditorialEach one of almost a billion existing Internet users generates each year a traffic equivalent to a pile of books one meter high, similar, in average, to 20 home computer hard drives. We are talking about 5 billion gigabytes of new data, representing approximately 800 megabytes per person, that must arrive at their destination in a secure, reliable and inconspicuous manner (*see footnote). In order for this huge volume of information to flow harmoniously 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, a complex coordination system is necessary both at national and international level; in Latin America and the Caribbean, LACNIC is a key part of this system. But this task is not only technical: it encompasses many different aspects ranging from the allocation of IP addresses to complex negotiations at national and international level. Fortunately, this task, barely perceived by the common user, falls into the hands of the Regional Internet Registries which, discretely and impartially, have had to consolidate their technical and human capabilities. In each edition of LACNIC’s Newslwtter, our quarterly publication, we report activities, projects and the advances in the services that LACNIC provides to its members and to the community. Produced by LACNIC’s staff, we wish, by this mean, to reach all people who are part of the Internet community in Latin America and the Caribbean to share experiences of management of the information and knowledge and to dive in the wealth of collective intelligence. Information, reports, technological proposals, news and technological innovations from all the region, and the other four Regional Internet Registries (RIR), that offer their services in the different regions of the world, are detailed in each edition. If you would like to propose an article or any topic to be published in this newsletter, please contact the responsible publisher at: webmaster@lacnic.net |
